"I've worked with production wizards on four continents. I've had the pleasure of working with some of the brightest and best in the business. Few of them even come close to the brilliance of Terry Phillips.
The body of work he has generated in numerous disciplines from eargasmic audio for broadcast on Radio, to eye-popping visual production for Television, is mind-boggling.
It has probably been said before but I don't know when the man sleeps!
Working with Terry Phillips is one of the bright spots of my week because he is a real broadcaster whose enthusiasm is incredible and I'm sure it has a positive impact on all who work with him."

"Texas" Terry Phillips, in Detroit?
Yea I get that one alot. Here's the short-ish version:
I grew up in Dallas Texas, my dad lived in Michigan, so I spent one month of summer and a week round Christmas in Michigan. At age 5, I "borrowed" my father's tape recorder and began entertaining myself... By the time I was 7 he had "interviewed" Yoda, Kermit the Frog, and other character voices. Including getting friends to help out with parody songs, commercials, and fake radio shows. My other love, was computers, rocking a Comodore 64 BBS before 13.
Growing up listening to Ken Dow, Bob Shuman, Blair Gardner, Steven's & Pruit, Andy Barber, Kid Kraddick (starting as a night jock), Jack Murphy, Billy Burke, Pamula Steele, Moby in the Morning, and more of the radio great's who went through Dallas, & collecting hotline numbers from those stations and talking to the jocks often enough to encourage me, a doe eyed sucker lol.
From big stations, an internship with KZPS, to board op, part time on air, and voices for the morning show at Y95, KHYI... To small; weekends at KBUS, nights at KIKT & KPLT, and first nights, then mornings at KBYB, where a consultant first added "Texas" to my air name so Texas Terry Phillips got the "Texas" in Arkansas HA!!!...
Starting out working with, following around, and generally annoying amazing talents like Brian Wilson, Aubrey Hayden, Buzzy Bennett, JJ McKay and Jack Murphy in Dallas could be the blame for encouraging me in the production room, but it clicked at KIIM in Tucson, computers (which did I mention I dig, cause I'm a geek) in production gained me some clients, awards, and more responsibility. By the time I left Tucson I was handling most of the imaging for the station and had an ever-growing client list.
Then in the odd move, I, Texas Terry turned down nights at legendary WSSL, and moved to Michigan!!!

Well I wanted to get to know my father, and to help sign on WFBE in Flint as Production Director and Midday air talent. I met my wife a native with families ties, had some of the most beautiful children on the planet and in 2000 I was hired away by CBS Radio at WYCD in Detroit, then adding WOMC and other random responsobilities.
So, here I am, a proud Texan, and someone who has fallen in love with Detroit. So Yea I'm a Motor City Mouth, a geek, Texas Terry, a Creative Director, Voice Over guy, and DAD... You know, that last one is the coolest though.
K-Hits Chicago!
The windy cities Classic Hit powerhouse is born... K-Hits, it's Retro and New... Classic and Young... and just makes you feel good.... So the tricky part, this is a huge station and launch, how to add pictures to get the message out to all of Chicago?????
Working with Christopher Clybor and Todd Cavanah to create the visual manifastation of Chicago's Greatest Hits, and Chicago's next great station was a blast!

I often think of Detroit, and the Rodney Dangerfield of cities… Time to give respect, show the love, man up, and be proud of the Motor City…
I think sometimes the dred we hear in the local news, the negative way friends from out-of-state view our home, and the way national media covers Detroit and the Motor City with a clear spite makes us forget how great this town, and this state really are!
Sure we’ve had mayors who have not helped, some who have hurt… a lot, thanks Kwame. Oh yea and the feeling that American built stuff isn’t so good anymore. Well that’s all hogwash. So as one of the behind the curtain people here, I’m going on a little crusade. One of enlightenment, one for the good, no great stuff right here that even those who live here forget. Who knows, maybe, just maybe, if we start to be just a little more proud of the Motor City, a little more proud of this great state of lakes… MAYBE we can help make it even BETTER!
So, reason #1
This is the only place in the world where:

I'd love to hear why you love Detroit... or your story of your great town, and great imaging you've done there... Tweet them to @fmprodguy, click the contact button above, or just email me.

"It would be the height of lunacy to think that there’s an audio exciter in the creative vein who possesses more depth, theatre of mind, joie de vie, passion, purpose, fun, realness, uniqueness, clutter-cutting abilities and time-tested performance than my friend Terry Phillips.
I know, because I’ve been on the receiving end of his brilliant copy all of this Century. He’s raised the bar consistently through those years and he is now more than ever a pleasure to work with!
I recommend as well as commend him with all my enthusiasm.
Book this man."

When I started out, wet behind the ears, to young to drink... and frightningly lucky to have some how scored a job at Y95 (KHYI Dallas in the early 90s)... I was lucky enough to work with several legendary talents in the business... First there was Buzz Bennett. I remember some of the great diatribes he would dive into, one of my favorites is...
Why do people listen to radio?
..."The Music" most would say
...some would reply "Their favorite DJ"
...sometimes you would hear "water cooler talk", "funny Morning show", even "traffic"... "weather"... as desprate paniced answers when they were told "WRONG" by Buzz
He would simply answer: "To Be ENTERTAINED!!!!"
Wow... simple... elegant... and so TRUE... Remember people listen to radio, turn on TV, surf the web, and indulge in social media for one reason... TO BE Entertained!!!!
Yea entertainment takes several forms, simple escapism, finding/learning/informing themselves of news/trivia/sprots scores/etc, even a horror flick is entertainment. The single linking key of all entertainment that engages and keeps people coming back is an emotional connection.
In the modern age and our new digital reality, having the same traded Sound Effects package, a generic voice, a station voice without passion, and/or the bare bones minimalist script maybe featuring the same same quick sarcasm that is used all round the country. Often, that isn't good enough to really cut though... Does not start, grow, or improve a emotional relationship with your brand... and don't kid yourself, everything is a brand... do you want to be like a favorite sports team, with pationate fans who stay with you through thick and thin (in this case "thin" would be listening though the damn commercial break with a PPM attached to their side, LOL)... or are you going to be their Tooth Paste, where they kind of like you, and are comfortable with what you give them... but if Walmart has a sale, your replaced for at least a short time.
Sound Crazy? Well after all the listener can pull radio and tv stations from around the globe and listen live. And there's Pandora, Last FM, Play.IT, Zune Pass, iTunes, Amazon MP3, heck remember Hulu and Netflix is more and more a threat because folks can stream them almost anywhere... Netflix by it self is the number ONE source of data streaming on the internet, more than every other stream COMBINED... Soooooo, Beware of the status quo... It's that sameness that is broadcast media's biggest weekeness.
The cure is being local, the cure is being creative, the cure is being more than a research slugline.
What ever your choice for voice and imaging effects package. The goal of everyone is to be beyond what we are today. In Radio, it's better cume, longer TSL, and an emotional connection that no iPhone/Pod/Pad or generic internet streaming service can ever provide.... Personality, Local content, and a connection to the listeners at the ground floor, grassroots if you will. And your station voice and sound are the one constant to the image of your brand. Your station voice is always on. Your imaging is always present. and sameness in the station voice and imaging can be the week link in an other wise amazing presentation...
So here's an idea... lets be more than the same, lets be creative... In the comming weeks I'll post some creative examples of what I have done, with my CBS stations WOMC and WYCD in Detroit, commercial work, and freelance too.
I would love to hear what you have done too!
